How to Use Your Carb-to-Insulin Ratio for Better Blood Sugar Management

How to Use Your Carb-to-Insulin Ratio for Better Blood Sugar Management

April 7 is World Health Day, and it’s the perfect reminder that managing diabetes is about more than medication—it’s about knowledge, planning, and support.

At GNS Medical, we believe in providing the tools and education necessary to live confidently with Type 1 diabetes. One essential skill every person with T1D should master is understanding their carb-to-insulin ratio.

Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

1. Know Your Ratio
Most people start with a 1:15 insulin-to-carb ratio, meaning 1 unit of insulin for every 15 grams of carbohydrates. However, this is highly individual and should always be customized with help from your healthcare provider.

2. Count Your Carbs
Review the carbohydrate content in your meal - this includes breads, fruits, starches, and sugars.

3. Do the Math
Take the total carbs and divide by your ratio. For example, if you eat 45 grams of carbs and your ratio is 1:15, you’d take 3 units of insulin.

Why It Matters:
Using your carb-to-insulin ratio can lead to more stable blood glucose levels, prevent highs and lows, and help reduce the risk of long-term diabetes complications.

At GNS Medical, we’re proud to support your journey with diabetes testing supplies, insulin pump accessories, continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), and real advice when you need it most.

Let’s use World Health Day as a motivator to get back on track and make informed decisions around your diabetes care.
